Bumrungrad launches the Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU), strengthening our ICU capabilities to treat life-threatening and critically-ill neurological patients.

The WHO states there are hundred kinds of neurologic diseases, one of the most common diseases is stroke, which is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability. According to a global survey performed in 2019, there were more than 101 million total cases of stroke, with new cases totaling 12.2 million and 6.5 million stroke-related deaths. In Thailand, there were 53 stroke-related deaths per 100,000 people, continuing the upward trend of such deaths.

Mrs. Artirat Charukitpipat, CEO of Bumrungrad International Hospital
, states, “the nervous system is complex because it manages and controls the other bodily organs and functions, like movement, feelings, speech, breathing, connecting the brain and the organs through the spinal cord. Hence, any neurologic condition can be deadly or lead to permanent disability. However, much of the danger of neurologic disease can be avoided or mitigated through early detection and proper treatment by experienced neurological team.”

As Bumrungrad is a private hospital providing quaternary care, our Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU) plays an important role by adding to our critical care medicine capabilities to treat our critically-ill patients more effectively and ensuring improved patient outcomes. We work to reduce secondary brain injury, which may lead to disability or dead, in the case which primary brain injury has occurred earlier. Patient safety lies at the heart of everything Bumrungrad does to help our patients obtain the best outcomes possible.

Dr. Roekchai Tulyapronchote, Director of the Neuroscience Center and Neurologist at Bumrungrad International Hospital
, states, “the Bumrungrad Hospital NCCU has 4 main advantages: 1) having team of experienced specialist doctors who have the expertise to accurately make diagnoses and provide treatment plans; 2) multidisciplinary teams working seamlessly; 3) using the most up-to-date medical technology and equipment; and 4.) Caring for patients in every crisis 24 hours a day, because each minute the brain lacks circulation, one million brain cells will die – potentially causing disability or death. The Bumrungrad Hospital NCCU cares for patients experiencing severe or life-threatening neurologic events, which may require high-risk procedures, like neurosurgery or spinal surgery, as part of treatment. Some example conditions are ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, brain hemorrhage, aneurysm, acute spinal injury, and brain tumor. We treat these conditions with advanced medical technology.”

Associate Professor Dr. Yot Navalitloha, Neurosurgeon at Bumrungrad International Hospital
, shared that most patients come into the hospital for 2 principal reasons: stroke & vascular disease, especially aneurysm and brain tumor. On average, he operates on about 200 patients per year at Bumrungrad International Hospital. Such procedures are very important and delicate. For example, a patient had a 2-inch brain tumor and required surgery immediately because if left in place it may cause further damage like paralysis. Now the patient has gone back to his normal life. One patient was diagnosed with an extremely large brain aneurysm, which was about 1.25 inches in size. Brain aneurysms often occur due in key arterial pathways, deep in the brain. Performing such neurosurgery requires expert teams of doctors. Further, complications can occur at any time, hence the NCCU, with our specialist staff, plays an important role in the care and monitoring of our patients 24/7. Round the clock care and monitoring of our NCCU patients is needed due to the risk of hemorrhage causing additional damage. Other complications include weakness, partial paralysis, difficult speech, blindness, memory loss, or loss of feeling.

Professor Dr. Sirintara Singhara Na Ayudhaya, Interventional Neuroradiologist at Bumrungrad International Hospital
, states that, “in addition to traditional neurosurgical procedures, Bumrungrad can perform advance procedures, like neuro interventional radiology, which can both diagnose and treat cerebrovascular (blood vessel of the brain) and spinal conditions. Also Bumrungrad can perform minimally invasive procedures, which only require a small incision (1-2mm) due to the use of miniaturized medical tools navigated by diagnostic imaging, reducing time spent in the ICU and the risk of post-procedural complications.

Neuro-radiological interventions can treat stroke and acute arteriovenous blockage, brain aneurysm, vascular birthmark since birth or after, and spinal vascular disease. At Bumrungrad, bi-plane imaging system is used to determine the location, size, and shape of the blood clot, blockage, aneurysm, or vascular birthmark in the brain or in the spinal cord. The strength of the bi-plane imaging system lies in its accuracy and the patients can resume their normal or near normal life sooner. The MRI assists doctors to determine the location, size, and shape of the blood clots or swollen blood vessels. Also the age and health of the patient must be considered to select the most appropriate and effective treatment option.

Medical team and patient transfer team

Importantly, after the patient is treated for any life-threatening or disability-prone conditions, at the NCCU, close follow-up care and treatment will begin to ensure patient safety. To facilitate these aims, the NCCU is designed to be the safest environment possible for our patients and is equipped with individualized patient heart rate and circulatory system monitors connected to a central monitoring system, enabling our ICU nurses to track each patient’s vital signs to provide appropriate care. The NCCU strengthens the capacity of the ICU to ensure the best possible treatment outcomes for all our patients.

The Private Sector Discusses Recommendations at the APEC 2022 Under the Concept ‘Embrace, Engage, Enable’

The Private sector, under the lead of APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), the host and chairman of the ABAC 2022 meeting and APEC CEO Summit 2022, under the concept “Embrace, Engage, Enable”, is ready to deliver recommendations and ways to drive the economy to the policy sector at the APEC 2022. With support from PwC as the APEC CEO Summit 2022’ as ‘Knowledge Partner’, ABAC is ready to deliver the Thought Leadership report to the business sector, which will be important to the drive and overcome of challenges for the private sector’s businesses in the near future.

Recommendations for APEC’s Economic Leaders
ABAC is the private-sector arm of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. The main mandate of this council is to deliver recommendations to APEC leaders in the annual meeting and to advise APEC members on the business sector’s concerns and important issues. ABAC meeting will be held 4 times per year. In the meantime, ABAC members will join the senior officials meeting, annual ministerial meeting, and APEC’s ministerial meeting, which are held all year.

In the past year, the Asia Pacific region has faced significant disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic, challenges from war, food crisis, energy crisis, and inflation, etc. The delivery of recommendations by the ABAC 2022 under the concept “Embrace, Engage, Enable” this year is considered a new dimension to the world situation, which is the embracing of opportunities, the engaging between parties, and the enabling of new possibilities with the main objective being to support the recovery and the re-energizing of economies.

Mr. Kriengkrai Thiennukul, ABAC 2022 Chair
, said, “This year, ABAC’s recommendations are collected considering economic conflicts and trends which are deeply connected. We have faced many obstacles, such as food and energy instability, impacts from the great pandemic, global disruption in the supply chain, and increasing pressure from inflation. These obstacles have disabled the region’s capability to achieve APEC’s mission which is to be an open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific community by 2040 for the prosperity of all our people and future generations. After 3 major meetings all year in Singapore, Canada, and Vietnam, until this last meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, from the 13th to the 16th of November, we can say that we have finalized 69 recommendations under 2 objectives which are “Promoting speedy and sustained recovery” and “To regain the momentum for sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth”. The latter includes advancing toward sustainability, deepening regional economic integration, and fostering an enabling environment through digitalization. The working group will then deliver the complete report to APEC leaders.”

Recommendations for the Business Sector
Besides delivering the recommendations to the policy sector, ABAC is also the host and chair for the APEC CEO Summit 2022 from the 16th to the 18th of November under the concept “Embrace, Engage, Enable”. This summit gathers economic leaders, thought leaders, and leading CEOs to exchange trade perspectives, investments, and the social drive to allow the Asia-Pacific region to embrace the opportunity, engage through collaboration, and enable new possibilities together with the private sector.

Mr. Montri Mahapreukpong, ABAC Executive Director 2022 and ABAC Thailand Alternate Member
, mentioned the importance of information support from the private sector for the business sector, which is the primary economic, trade, and investment driver in the Asia-Pacific region. “Even though ABAC’s primary role is to deliver recommendations to the policy sector, in order to enable the private sector to function thoroughly and powerfully, we emphasize supporting entrepreneurs in all channels through the reports which serves to be a recommendation to the business sector on key issues. As we all realize, businesses are facing all-around challenges, including pressure from higher inflation, adaptation to changes in many factors, such as faster digitalization of businesses and consumers, and the problem of climate change, which the entire world, including the Asia-Pacific region, is focusing on right now. We believe that during these times, the business sector requires reliable information that will be used as a guideline for immediate adaptation.”, Mr. Montri said.

The report was developed by PwC, APEC CEO Summit 2022's knowledge partner, in providing insights during the meeting. Mr. Kasemsit Pathomsak, Executive Director, APEC CEO Summit 2022 and ABAC Thailand Alternate Member, has commented on the support, “With ABAC’s role as host and chair of APEC CEO Summit 2022, we see the importance of having insights for this historic summit. Apart from the intense conversation during the summit, we have important recommendations-filled report for the business sector to utilize to create the appropriate business strategy in the future. The host appreciates PwC's support as a knowledge partner in delivering this Thought Leadership report. We believe it would be useful for both the summit and the business sector to use reports as a guideline for creating sustainability and stability.

Mr. Sridharan Nair, Vice Chairman Markets, PwC Asia Pacific
, referred on PwC’s support of the Thought Leadership report under the title ‘Asia Pacific’s Time: Responding to the New Reality’. “Businesses have a critical role to play in driving Asia Pacific’s continued growth and shaping its future as a resilient and sustainable economic powerhouse. To do this, there is an urgent need to translate the uncertainty that today’s reality brings into opportunity. Business leaders need to be bold to adapt and evolve at speed, focusing on building trust and collaborating with all stakeholders. To do this, we have outlined five aligned and mutually reinforcing success factors - supply chains, regional enterprise growth, digital economy, workforce and the evolving ESG landscape, that will drive differentiation and competitiveness for businesses to prosper in the region.”, said Mr. Sridharan.

The Significant Force in Driving the Economy

The delivery of ABAC’s recommendations from the private sector to the policy sector and the Thought Leadership report from the private sector to the business sector that will be happening through the ABAC 2022 will be a key force to drive the economy because the business sector is the main driver in creating trade growth in the Asia Pacific region through APEC.

The private sector, led by the ABAC 2022, trusts that the recommendation will help unite APEC to drive the Asia Pacific region to create harmony and dynamics by promoting open and free trade and investment, supporting and accelerating the unity of the economy at a regional level, and supporting economic and technical collaboration, supporting humanity stability, and facilitating favorable and sustainable business environment to allow policies to become concrete and create tangible agreements that are beneficial for people together.

LANXESS exhibits consumer protection portfolio at In-cosmetics Asia in Thailand

  • LANXESS at in-cosmetics Asia, November 1-3, 2022, BITEC, Bangkok, Thailand, Booth K50A+B

Bangkok, November 4 2022
– German specialty chemicals company LANXESS is showcasing from November 1 to 3 at in-cosmetics Asia in Bangkok its comprehensive portfolio and concentrated expertise in the field of active ingredients and formulations for personal care products.

Sustainable preservation of green and clean label products

The LANXESS Flavors & Fragrances (F&F) business unit is presenting its comprehensive portfolio for personal care, including preservatives, multifunctionals and emollients.

Benzoic acid (Purox B) and sodium benzoate (Purox S) are very effective nature-identical and fully biodegradable preservatives. They protect personal care products effectively against bacteria and especially against fungi. The antimicrobial activity of Purox can be enhanced by the multifunctional Kalama 3PP, which is also nature-identical. This allows the use of Purox at higher pH values.

"Green" surfactants: Added value for consumers and the environment

The green multifunctional Solbrol CLL is ideal for body care products in the clean label area. This active ingredient creates a long-lasting foam with small pore sizes. Therefore the foam is perceived as particularly mild and caring by consumers. In addition, Solbrol CLL has antimicrobial properties and can be used as an active in anti-dandruff and anti-acne formulations. Solbrol CLL is based on coconut oil and is 100% renewable. "Green surfactants like CLL play an important role in the development of end products with an optimized environmental and safety profile," explains Dr. Matthias Kunze, Business Development Manager in the Flavors & Fragrances division.

Healthcare by Saltigo – long-lasting, yet gentle protection against insect bites

The wholly-owned LANXESS subsidiary Saltigo is presenting the insect repellent Saltidin®, which is ideal not only for producers of insect repellents but also of cosmetics, who are looking to supplement their product portfolio with a gentle and effective health care product. “Products containing Saltidin® provide long-lasting protection against insects and ticks that may transmit the pathogens that cause diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, Lyme disease, among others. It is also highly effective, yet gentle and suitable for use in a wide range of cosmetic formulations – a quite remarkable combination,” Dr. Nora Hofmann, Global Business Manager Saltidin® at Saltigo GmbH, said.

The active ingredient is an alternative to DEET and is marketed under the brand name Saltidin®. Also known as Icaridin or Picaridin, it has been recommended by numerous national and international health organizations as an effective prophylaxis. Thanks to its outstanding cosmetic characteristics and effectivity, it can be used for the production of insect repellent applications for the whole family.

LANXESS launches new Care business line

LANXESS is also presenting its new Care business line, which was established following the acquisition of the microbial control business from U.S. Corporation International Flavors & Fragrances and further strengthens the company’s consumer protection segment. This business line is integrated in LANXESS’s Material Protection Products (MPP) business unit, which specializes in microbial applications.
